Tradies Tool Talk

We did a brochure called the Tradies Tool Talk after a young gay boy was harassed by workmen as he and his sister walked past a building site in the city. I met the mother one Saturday morning at Open Doors. She was most upset when telling me what had happened the previous week.

I found out exactly which site and the building company. I wrote to the CEO, and I wrote to the Union the following Monday, complaining. I got an immediate reaction from the CEO, and it was decided that the union and company leaders would go to the worksite on Friday and have a serious talk with the workers. Of course, no one admitted to yelling names and calling out to the boy, but they quickly learned the union would not support them if this happened again. Below is the letter I wrote to the CEO of the company.

I was very impressed with the CEO. He made contact on the day he received the letter, and within the week he had organised and completed the talk with the tradies on the work site. There were no excuses from him, and he was proactive in getting the issue sorted.

So, a brochure was written, printed and delivered to the union office and then distributed throughout the workforce.
